Organising a Small Apartment for a Growing Family
More kids, same space — here’s how to make it work without losing your mind

Living in an apartment with a growing family is less about having enough space and more about using the space you have wisely. Most Kuching families aren’t waiting for a bigger home before they get organised — they’re making the most of what they have right now. These five tips will help you do the same.
1. Go Vertical With Your Storage
When floor space is limited, the walls are your best friend. Install shelving units above eye level in bedrooms, living areas, and even hallways to store items that don’t need daily access — think seasonal clothes, school project supplies, or extra bedding. Tall wardrobes maximise storage without eating into your floor plan, and hooks on the backs of doors are an easy win for bags, jackets, and towels. The goal is to keep surfaces clear so the home feels open even when it’s fully occupied.
2. Choose Furniture That Does Double Duty
Every piece of furniture in a small apartment should earn its place. Opt for beds with built-in drawers, ottomans with hidden storage, and dining tables that fold down when not in use. A bench at the entrance with storage underneath keeps shoes contained and gives kids a spot to sit when putting them on. When shopping for new pieces, always ask: does this serve more than one purpose? If not, it may not be worth the floor space.
3. Give Every Child Their Own Zone
Shared bedrooms are common in apartment living, and they work best when each child has a clearly defined personal space — even if it’s just a corner. A dedicated shelf, a small desk, and their own set of drawers goes a long way in reducing conflict and clutter. Colour-coding storage bins or labelling shelves by name makes it easier for younger kids to keep things in order independently. Defined zones also make tidying up faster because everyone knows exactly where things belong.
4. Rotate Toys Instead of Storing Everything at Once
One of the biggest sources of clutter in a family home is toys. Rather than keeping everything accessible all the time, rotate them — pack away half the toys and bring them out every few weeks. Kids engage more with fewer toys at once, and your living room stays manageable. Store the off-rotation items in clearly labelled boxes under beds or in a dedicated storage cupboard. Facilities like storerooms, which some condominiums offer, are worth utilising for bulkier items that don’t need to be inside the unit at all.
5. Build a Drop Zone Near the Entrance
School bags, sports gear, lunchboxes, and shoes — families generate a lot of daily in-and-out clutter. A dedicated drop zone near your front door contains all of it in one spot. This can be as simple as a row of hooks, a small cabinet, and a basket for shoes. When everyone in the family knows where things land the moment they walk in, the rest of the apartment stays significantly cleaner. It takes a week to build the habit, but it makes a noticeable difference almost immediately.
